2010 GMC Community Activities

December – GMC sponsored Panarat and Michael Dugmore who will participate in the London Marathon 2011 to raise funds for Attlee Foundation. The Charity was set up to commemorate Clement Attlee’s life, work and achievements through piloting projects that benefit the people he cared most about – those disadvantaged by poverty, disability or lack of opportunity. December – GMC sponsored GBP 500 to the Thurrock YFC under 11 Panthers team for their football kits for the coming season. The youth football team ranked no. 1 in the 2009 – 2010 season. To find out more, visit the Thurrock Football Club website.


November – GMC has sponsored GBP 60 to Seema and Annabel, who will participate in the British Indian Friendship Walk which includes a 95 km walk in 4 days in India and they will retrace some of the steps of Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March to raise money to support families in India that are living in poverty. November – Prem Goyal attended the Asian University for Women (AUW) charity Dinner at the Mandarian Oriental Hotel on 18th November and GMC donated GBP 250 to the charity. The key guest host for the evening was AUW patron, Mrs. Cherie Blair QC who provided an overview of the AUW and its key initiatives. The AUW is a non-Profitable institute operating in the education sector; there aim is to provide Asian Women with access to educational resources and opportunities. September – GMC sponsored 4 awards: Award for Excellence in contributing to College Life, Award for Excellence in Student Mentoring, Award for Excellence in Promoting Community Cohesion and Award for Excellence in Promoting a Sustainable Environment at the Tower Hamlet College annual Student Achievement Awards ceremony which took place on 16 Sept. 4 GMC staff attended the ceremony. Tower Hamlet College offers a vast range of courses from BTECs and A Levels to short courses for 16-19 year olds and courses ranging from Teacher Training to short employability courses for adult. August – GMC donated GBP 100 to the Deutsche Bank Enduro Challenge 2010 Team who had braved high seas on August Bank holiday weekend as they took on the 2010 Enduro Challenge. This year’s team competed against Credit Suisse, Barclays Capital and UBS in the cross-channel triathlon, which started at Tower Bridge in London and ended at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This year the team was fundraising for the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). MCS is a leading UK charity caring for the UK’s seas, shores and wildlife. The money raised will help to establish vital marine protected areas, clear coasts and seas of litter and reduce overfishing, which has a detrimental effect on the UK’s waters. The challenge tested both physical and mental endurance and consisted of an 85-mile running relay from London to Dover, a 30-mile swim relay from Dover to Calais and then a 180-mile cycle relay from Calais to Paris. August – Prem Goyal and Catherine Ching attended the Sovereigns Day Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on 13 August and GMC donated GBP 1,200 to the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. The ABF The Soldiers’ Charity began as the Army Benevolent Fund in 1944. It gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. July – Prem Goyal attended the Lord Mayor’s XI v Royal Household XI Celebrity Cricket Match at Windsor Castle on 4 July in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal 2010. The Lord Mayor’s Appeal 2010 aims to generate significant funds to bring dynamic musical and cricketing opportunities into state schools, academy schools and their communities in London’s most challenging boroughs. June – Prem Goyal, Sunil Chander, Mouhcine Bourous and Catherine Ching attended the “Slumdog Secret Millionaire” charity dinner at Cafe Spice Nameste on 30 June in aid of the Sharma Foundation. The Sharma Foundation was established by Dr. Seema Sharma, the Slumdog Secret Millionaire to provide opportunities for those who have been less fortunate in India. April – Prem Goyal with two guests, attended the Lord Mayor’s Big Curry 2010 charity lunch at the Guildhall on 29 April. GMC has donated GBP 285. Money raised from the event went directly to the Current Operations Fund, which supports soldiers and their families affected by the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. April – GMC donated GBP 100 to David Mills, who participated in the 2010 Messina Marathon for the Childcare – Bentwood Catholic Children’s society (BCCS). April – GMC has sponsored the 8th annual Safer Neighbourhood Tournament (SNT) at the Tower Hamlet borough. The SNT aims to raise awareness of community safety and build relationship between the diverse communities towards the emergency services in the community and celebrate grassroots football. The winners of 2010 are London Tiger (picture left above) who win the fantastic cash prize of GBP1000 beating runners up Clichy FC from Stepney.


March – GMC has sponsored David Parkhill, who has participated in the ‘Miles for Missing People’ 10km run in Hyde Park on 13 March. The charity provides support for missing children, vulnerable adults and families left in limbo. Learn more about the Missing People from their website.

March – GMC donated (GBP 100) to Sarswati Foundation in support of Ania Lichota, who is climbing Mt. Everest (her last of 7 summits) to raise $100k to build a school in Nepal. The Sarswati Foundation is a youth-led organization to bring youth into action in transforming societies crippled by war, violence and poverty.  Learn more about Sarswati Foundation from their website.

March – GMC donated GBP 300 to Jason Hale,Olivier Kouao and Iain Mackrory-Jamieson, who have taken on the challenging Brighton Marathon on 18th April to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Afrikids and the disabilities Trust respectively. February – GMC has formed a team of 6, who participated in the 2010 London Virgin Marathon on 25th April 2010 (picture right above). They have raised about GBP 25,000 for the Attlee Foundation which is an amazing charity based in London, Tower Hamlets doing some exciting and excellent work with communities in need, particularly young people.


January – GMC raised GBP 3,864 for Haiti earthquake for the British Red Cross. With up to a staggering 200,000 people feared dead, 300,000 people made homeless and desperate for food and water following the massive earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday 12th January. January – Catherine Ching, 2009 GMC Community contribution Award Winner, completed a trek to the top of Mount Kinabalu (Sabah, Malaysia), 4,095 meters above sea level. She raised GBP 100 for The Attlee Foundation.

January –  GMC has announced its commitment to invest £1 million in the community over the next few years. In addition, GMC staff are committed to collectively investing 10,000 professional hours into the community.
