2015 GMC Community Activities

December – GMC honoured two longstanding civic champions at the St. Lucia National Day Celebrations at Newham Town Hall. Justin Moore MBE JP, who served 25 years as a Magistrate in East London, was presented by a GMC Life Achievement Award. A Community Champion Award was also presented to P.C. Tracy Gunn, who has served 15 years as a Newham Borough Council Liaison Officer.
December – For the third consecutive year, GMC sponsored the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Surrey Sports Awards. This year, the award was deservedly won by Alex Bliss of Ash Tennis Club in Guildford. In his speech, GMC CEO Prem Goyal said: “We are immensely proud to sponsor this great award and we pledge to sponsor it again next year.”
November – GMC were proud sponsors of the 19th Anniversary of the African Voice’s African Film Awards at the Old Town Hall in Stratford. During the ceremony, Prem Goyal, CEO of Global Markets Consultants, presented the Best Actress 2015 Award (Nollywood UK) to Hilda Tola Nevoh-Williams.
November – GMC threw its support behind ‘Anti-Bullying Week’, an campaign by Diversity Role Models to tackle homophobia towards young people in schools and colleges. GMC employees supported the initiative by eating homemade lunches throughout the week and donated the money they would’ve spent on lunch to the charity.
November – GMC sponsored the 2015 Mulan Awards at the Corinthia Hotel, which celebrate the laudable achievements of Chinese women in the UK throughout the year. GMC CEO Prem Goyal presented two awards at the ceremony, the Young Achiever of the Year Award and the Contribution to Public Service and Community Award.
October – GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal was invited to give an account of his journey to business success at Lord Mayor Dame Fiona Woolf’s Annual Reflections event. During his speech, Prem urged business leaders in attendance to work together to achieve more diversity, equality and inclusion at the top in London. Prem also pledged £1 million to promoting better inclusivity and diversity at the top of the City of London. Lord Mayor Annual Reflections
Aminu GMC Award October – GMC recognised the life and talents of Former Mayor of Lambeth Adedamola Aminu by presenting him with the GMC Life Acheivment Award. The Award was presented to Adedamola in honour of his servitude to the people of Lambeth as Mayor and his overall contribution to people in London, at a special Southwark Eid Celebration.
October – GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal was shortlisted for ‘Campaigner of the Year’ at the European Diversity Awards for providing leadership opportunities in London. Southwark’s Ajaratu Bangura was also shortlisted for Unilever’s ‘Hero of the Year’ category for her hard work in operating the Muslim Woman Food Bank. Peckham Rye Veterans football team September – GMC agreed to sponsor the Peckham Rye Veterans football team for the 2015/2016 season. GMC had entered a deal to sponsor the team’s kit and agreed to provide the post-match food for all the team’s home matches in the footballing season.
September – GMC proudly recognized some of the champions of the voluntary and charity sector at the 2015 Third Sector Awards. GMC entered an exciting 3-year partnership with Third Sector earlier in the year and presented three awards at the ceremony. GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal presented the award for Fundraising Team of the Year to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and presented the Small Charity Big Achiever Award to Diversity Role Models. Finally, Prem presented Dallas Pounds of Royal Trinity Hospice with the Rising Chief Executive Award. Third Sector Awards 2015
100k London Cambridge walk August – GMC sponsored seven runners to participate in the 100k London-to-Cambridge Challenge to raise funds for Disasters Emergency Committee Nepal Earthquake Appeal. Natasha D’Souza, Maria Capaldo, Amadu Kanumansa,  Tajwar Rahman and Bernice Wong join GMC Director Catherine Ching and GMC CEO Prem Goyal for the grueling 100k walk. Overall, Team Southwark raised close to £4,000 for the appeal.
August – GMC sponsored the Abike Ade Foundation’s picnic in Potters Field Park near London City Hall. Over 30 people from across South London attended the picnic. During the picnic, CEO of GMC Prem Goyal told the gathered attendees that more events like this must be organised to bolster cohesion in local communities. Abike Ade picnic 2015
Southwark Eid - Musharraf and Prem July – GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal, along with Musharraf Chaudhary, Chair of the Southwark Muslim Forum, organised a successful Southwark Eid Festival in Burgess Park, which over 1,000 people attended. Over 100 people volunteered to make the event possible and it was the biggest Eid event the in Southwark’s history.
July – GMC supported some of the UK’s finest musical talent at a fundraising concert. GMC gave 10 community champions the opportunity to attend the concert which helped raise funds for Mei Yi- Foo’s recording project ‘Connotations’. Mei Yi Foo was the BBC Music Magazine’s 2013 Best Newcomer of the Year. music1
iba charity1 June – Dorcas Fayemi, Founder of IBA Charity was presented the 2015 GMC Community Champion Award by Amadu Kanumansa and a cheque for £100. Dorcas’ IBA Charity provides educational and leisure opportunities for young people including disabled people, their carers and families, and support for older people. Congratulation’s Dorcas!
June – GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal joined Southwark’s Headteachers and other education leaders at their annual end of year dinner to celebrate their success. Prem presented the Enterprise Award to Bessemer Grange Primary School, which included a cheque for £300! Prem is Patron of Southwark Headteacher’s Executive. southwarkheads3
speech5 June – GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal was invited to share an inspirational speech with pupils at St Mary Magdalene Primary School in Peckham. Prem’s key message was ‘choose textbooks, not Facebook!’. He also stressed following the guidance of parents and teachers, getting homework done on time and learning life skills from parents and siblings.
May – GMC recognised Victoria Harley and Hulusi Yuruten, two community champions, with GMC Awards. Victoria received the GMC Community Champion Award and a £100 cheque for her work as CEO of Abike Ade Foundation. Hulisi received the GMC Life Achievement Award a cheque for £250. Hulisi is the Founder and Chairman of the Southwark Cyprus Turkish Association. two community champions
robes3 April – GMC sponsored former Mayor of Southwark Abdul Mohamed who was running his third consecutive London Marathon. GMC sponosred £100 which went towards Abdul’s chosen charity the Robes Project.
April – GMC’s CEO Prem Goyal participated in a National Youth Debate, providing solutions for young people. The audience of passionate and knowledgeable young people asked questions on issues such as the NHS, the economy, education, the economy and more. They cheered Prem’s ideas on job creation and when he said he he would personally help with CV and job advice. Prem NYD debate1
March – GMC held its 13th annual award ceremony. Three GMC awards were presented to Winsome Okeke, Eddie Wilcox and Juliet Atako for their longtime contribution and selfless dedication to their community. Wisome received the GMC Lifetime Achievement Award and a cheque for £250, Eddie received the GMC Unsung Hero Award and a cheque for £100, and Juliet Atako got the GMC Unsung Hero Award and a cheque for £100. gmc award march
aaron gmc award March – GMC Business Analyst, Aaron D’Souza, received the 2015 GMC Business Analyst of the Year Award as part of GMC’s annual award ceremony. Aaron was delighted to receive the award and is looking forward to continuing his professional development and progress at GMC.
February – GMC continued to support the fight against the Ebola Crisis in West Africa by donating £250 to the Sierra Leone Muslim Women Cultural Organisation. The money will help buy vital items including food, clothes and sanitary items. This takes GMC’s total contribution to help combat the Ebola Crisis to £500 so far. gmc award march
foodbank1 February – GMC has been supporting a food bank project at the South London Islamic Centre. Amadu Kanumansa and his wife Ajaratu Bangura have been delivering and helping distribute food at the food bank for the past 3 years. GMC are committed to ensuring our most vulnerable in society are protected.
January – GMC supported community champion Juliet Atako and her efforts to raise funds to help those affected by the Ebola Crisis. GMC made an initial donation of £250 to support her work with the Rotary Club’s Surgical Glove Campaign ebola1
colourful1 January – GMC’s Aaron D’Souza is hosting a weekly breakfast show on Colourful Radio. His show, Colourful Breakfast focuses on local issues such as inequality, transport and education and seeks to tackle the pressing issues of the day as well as showcasing the work of community groups. He also presents a sports show Colourful Kickoff.
